-Brief History of Charles River Girls Hockey-

In the spring of 1997, a group of avid hockey parents from four neighboring towns gathered together for a discussion of girls’ hockey in the Boston area.  With the limited number of girls in each town, the feeling was that the players would be served better by joining teams to form a regional program.  From that discussion the Charles River program was born.  There were 3 teams at the start of which one team was compiled to send a team to play in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Now 11 years later the program boasts 16 teams with over 250 girls. Charles River is the second largest program in Massachusetts.  For those 11 years we have held a tournament in February hosting teams from Canada, Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Maine and California just to  name a few. 

The purpose of the program has been and continues to be to develop girls into hockey players with the tools necessary to continue playing the game of hockey for as long as they desire, whether that be through high school, college, pick up leagues or a European professional career, and most importantly the life skills needed for a successful life as adults.   We have helped to produce an Olympian and have sent girls to play hockey at to over 30 colleges, including Harvard, Northeastern, Maine, and a captain at Boston College.  We strive to develop all of our players on all of our teams by providing them with solid coaching and equal ice from our top level teams down to our recreational level teams.  Now with a new home rink, Charles River expects even more success.  The results of our new home rink, which provides our players with consistent and season long practices and skills is already showing.  The 2009 Charles River U14-1 team is the 3rd Charles River team to qualify for the National Tournament since our inception.  We are looking forward to many more successful years and appearances at the National Tournament.
